Platelet Rich Plasma for Hair Loss in Kentucky

New information was released to the medical group on recent researches affecting its use in wound healing. Although considered in the early stage of study, researchers already recognized the value of platelet rich plasma (PRP) as the all-natural medical procedure for hair, scalp and skin stimulation,

Male and female pattern baldness is alleviated by a combination of PRP and hair transplant surgery. Successful outcomes of stand-alone procedure are very encouraging as PRP promotes hair growth. It utilizes needling treatment that stimulates hair follicles to grow.

PRP restores hair loss

Stem cells and blood products with specific growth factors stimulate tissue regeneration and healing. PRP has been used for two decades as medial adjunct therapy in several medical specialties and it has been confirmed to be a safe and effective treatment. It has also been proven to be effective in the field of hair restoration. Although PRP for hair loss is not intended to replace other therapy options approved by FDA such as Rogaine and Propecia, this is another therapeutic option provided for patients suffering from hair loss.

PRP procedure

As a simple procedure, the whole thing is done in the office or clinic. First, blood is drawn from the patient and spun in a centrifuge to separate plasma from the red cells. The plasma is centrifuged to high concentration. To prevent pain, an anesthetic block is given to nerves of the scalp. PRP is then applied to the desired area followed by micro-trauma that is also injected under the skin. The procedure causes slight reddening of the area but there is no indication that anything was done to the scalp. A micro-needling session penetrates the PRP and stimulates the follicles. For the next 3 days, the scalp is tender but majority of patients resume their normal activities even after the procedure or on the following day.

Expectations

PRP is not expected to regrow new hair follicles, but it assists in reversing the thinning of the hair follicles due to male or female pattern baldness. PRP stimulates the follicles to grow hair fibers that will be healthier, longer and thicker. Hair transplantation through strip-method or follicular unit extraction is the only way to increase the number of hair follicles.

Positive result is evident within eight weeks but it may take from six months to a year for visual improvements. Result lasts up to 2 years before a repeat treatment is needed. It is typically recommended that patients return for a touch-up treatment once a year.
